PURPOSE OF FLUX and RECRUSHED FLUX
3 PRINCIPLES OF FLUX POWDER (VIRGIN and RECRUSHED)
1. All flux neutral powders (virgin, bonded, agglomerated, closed loop and recrushed) have only one primary purpose as detailed in any welding hand book ….. “to blanket and shield the weld metal from nitrogen pick-up”. Secondary benefits include stabilizing the arc, limit smoke and fumes, contour the weld metal.
2. AWS and ASME define Recrushed Flux as a “NEW FLUX” …. The same as any virgin flux and it must be classified as a new flux and carry the “S’ designation.
3. All new fluxes, including Virgin, Closed Loop and Recrushed, are classified not by chemical or mechanical properties BUT by end performance of the WELD as delivered by the flux/wire combination … ie. “Is the weld solid”?
RECRUSHED FLUX
1. Recrushed flux is less hydroscopic than virgin
2. Recrushed flux usually yields higher toughness and impact values than virgin in the weld itself.
Fatigue strength is based on joint details not welding consumables
